Video – Insert Footnotes to MS Word documents

A footnote is a type of note which appears at the bottom of the page in a document. In contrast, endnotes appear at the end of the document.

When you add a footnote, Word puts a reference mark or symbol in the body of the text to draw attention to the footnote.

Typically, a footnote is something you want to flag to the reader without disrupting the flow of the main text. You can also use them to add citation.

Here’s how to do it.

Steps

  1. Click in the document where you want to reference the footnote.
  2. On the References tab, select Insert Footnote.
  3. Enter the text for the footnote.

You can return to the place in the document by double-clicking the number or symbol at the start of the note.
