Turn Off Update Automatic Links

November 9, 2006 By Jeeves

If you Update Automatic Links On Open, you’re placing pressure on Word as it has to check and update each link everytime it starts. If you have a large document, say more than 10 pages, this can cause real issues with performance. Turning off this option will make documents open faster and reduce the likelihood of Word crashing. You can update the links before you go to print.

  1. Click Tools, Options, and then the General tab.

  2. Click to clear the Update automatic links on Open checkbox

To manually update links:

  1. From the Edit menu, click Links.
  2. Click the Source file that you want to update.
  3. Click Update Now.
